OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G Review – The Mid-range 5G All-Rounder

OPPO has recently announced Reno5 Pro 5G, the successor of the last year’s Reno4 Pro in India. It’s a premium 5G smartphone and also India’s first smartphone to be powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000+ chipset. OPPO Reno5 Pro Design

Design is one of the key elements of OPPO’s Reno series. Almost all phones under the Reno series come with a unique design and show great craftsmanship. Like all its predecessors, the Reno5 Pro 5G also boasts a brilliant design that offers an excellent in-hand feel. There are two colors to choose from – Astral Blue and Starry Black. The device I received for review is Astral Blue and it looks absolutely amazing.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Design
OPPO Reno5 Pro Design

The Astral Blue colour variant of the Reno5 Pro uses a new design technique called Reno Glow to provide a more shining effect and to resist fingerprints. It has a thickness of 7.6mm, which is 0.1mm smaller than the Reno4 Pro making it one of the slimmest 5G smartphones available in the Indian market. The frame of the Reno5 Pro is made out of plastic and wrapped with shiny paint while the rear part has a matte frosted glass with curved edges.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Camera
OPPO Reno5 Pro Camera

The back panel has a slightly rough texture that provides very good gripping and also prevents the device from slipping. The rear quad-camera module is placed on the top left with three Lenses placed symmetrically with a fourth lens placed on the right side in-line with the first lens. The camera module protrudes a little outwards and makes the phone slightly wobble on a flat surface. This is quite common in the latest smartphones and doesn’t make much difference if you use the phone with a case.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Top
OPPO Reno5 Pro Top

Along with a microphone, you’ll find a flat ribbon-like strip on the top frame with ‘Designed for Reno‘ embossed on it. A volume rocker is placed on the left side of the frame while the Sleep/Wake or Power button is placed on the opposite side (on the right) of the frame. Both buttons are placed ergonomically for easier one-handed operation and are easily reachable by both thumb and the index finger.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Bottom
OPPO Reno5 Pro Bottom

Coming to the bottom, you’ll find the Dual SIM tray, primary microphone, USB-C port, and also a speaker. The SIM Tray has two slots and accepts two Nano-SIM cards. The device misses out on the expandable storage slot and also a 3.5mm Audio jack. You’ll have to use the USB-C port in case you want to use the earphones. Unlike most of the OEM’s, OPPO has not provided the Type-C to 3.5mm Audio adapter, instead, you’ll get a USB-C earphone inside the box.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Display

OPPO Reno5 Pro sports a 6.55-inch Curved Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels and has a screen-to-body ratio of 92.1%. The device has very slim bezels on all four sides and a single punch-hole camera on the top left. The display is HDR10+ certified and emits blue light of less than 7.5% to protect your eyes. On top, the display is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Display
OPPO Reno5 Pro Display

The best-in-class curved AMOLED screen on the Reno5 Pro 5G is well calibrated and produces rich colors with good contrast. The colors look vivid and also the text looks sharp. Even the viewing angles are great. It has a peak brightness of 1100 nits and is bright enough to be viewed under direct sunlight. I haven’t experienced any issues while reading the screen outdoors. A small portion display is covered by the front camera but it will not affect your viewing experience. You’ll start ignoring the camera cut-out after using the device for a couple of days.

The display has a maximum screen refresh rate of 90Hz which is switchable. The display doesn’t support features like Auto mode or Mi 10T’s Adaptive Sync that adjust the screen’s refresh rate depending on the content to optimize the battery life. There are only two options – 60Hz & 90Hz and you need to configure it manually from the display settings. Keeping the display at 90Hz will give you a slightly better user experience, smoother scrolling, and better animations but it affects battery life.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Home screen
OPPO Reno5 Pro Home screen

The Reno5 Pro supports HDR and comes with Widevine L1 support to stream high-resolution content on Netflix (Not tested) and Amazon Prime (Tested). The curved screen with thin bezels will definitely provide you an immersive experience while watching movies/shows and also playing games. On top, the light-weight design doesn’t feel heavy even if you have to hold the device up for extended periods of time.

The device supports Always-on-display (AOD) and you can also easily customize as per your needs. It comes with built-in Always-on-display templates, and you can even design your own AOD theme and adjust the parameters. Once enabled, the AOD shows time, data, app icons for pending notifications, and how much battery is left in the device. Out of the box, there are 12 Digital clock styles and 6 Analog clock styles.

OPPO Reno5 Pro AOD

Curved edges provide slightly better user experience but sometimes bad software leads to ghost touches. But this is not the case with the Reno5 Pro 5G. OPPO has made some significant improvements in the algorithms to prevent Ghost touches. The device works absolutely fine even with the Swipe gesture navigation. I have not experienced any Ghost touch issues throughout my review. Some of the other display features are:

OPPO Reno5 Pro Curved Display
OPPO Reno5 Pro Curved Display
  • OSIE visual effect (Work only with supported apps)
  • Change screen color temperature
  • SGS Eye Care Display certified (Eye comfort mode)
  • Show or hide the front camera
  • Switch to 60Hz or 90Hz
  • Adaptive brightness
  • Enable / Disable Always-on-display
OPPO Reno5 Pro Bezel

Overall, the Reno5 Pro’s AMOLED display is impressive, best in its price segment, and also one of the best displays I ever used.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Performance

The OPPO Reno5 Pro is powered by the powerful MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ chipset coupled with Mali G77 MP9 GPU and offered in only one configuration – 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB UFS 2.1 Storage. Sadly, there is no higher storage variant and also the device doesn’t support expandable storage. So, you’ll have to adjust with maximum available storage or use 3rd party cloud provides such as One Drive, Google Drive, etc.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Display Edge
OPPO Reno5 Pro Display Edge

I have used the Reno5 Pro as my main device for about 15 days and the performance is excellent. OPPO has made a lot of improvements in the software part and it syncs very well with the hardware. The multitasking was a breeze and even the Swipe navigation worked perfectly without any issues. I haven’t experienced any lags or shutters in any regular activities such as Browsing social media, chatting over WhatsApp, Duo video calls, Watching YouTube videos, etc. The device achieved a read speed of 637MB/s and a write speed of 328MB/s.

Apart from the basic games like Temple Run, The Room Three, the processor also handles graphic-intensive games very well. I tested Reno5 Pro with popular gaming titles like Call of Duty, Asphalt 8, and Asphalt Xtreme. The gameplay was smooth with a very good touch response. The device runs at normal temperature with medium-graphics but starts warming up when you play at high-graphics settings for more than 30 minutes but it will not affect the gaming experience.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Outdoor
OPPO Reno5 Pro Outdoor

This is not a gaming-specific phone but still works well with most of the popular gaming titles. The 90Hz refresh rate with 180Hz touch-sampling also enhances the gaming experience. The overall gaming experience on the Reno5 Pro is good and should be more than enough in case if you are a Beginner or Intermediate gamer.

Coming to security, the device is equipped with an upgraded in-display fingerprint reader and is located close to the bottom. The reader is fast, responsive, and accurate. Setting up the fingerprint reader hardly took a few seconds and detected my fingers without any extra effort. The reader detects mildly-wet fingers but fails when the finger is completely wet. It supports up to five fingers.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Fingerprint Scanner
OPPO Reno5 Pro Scanner

One of the most useful features of ColorOS 11 is the Breathing Light. When you lift your phone from the table, the breathing light activates immediately and helps you quickly identify the location of the fingerprint reader. Out of the box, the reader comes with 8 built-in unlock animations and can be switched easily from the Settings -> Personalize -> Fingerprint styles.

Along with the fingerprint unlock, the device also supports enhanced Face Unlock (way better than the one you get with Stock Android. It is not as secured as an Optical reader but does its job well even under low-lighting conditions. Unlock speeds are better than the fingerprint reader but less secured. Once enabled, bring the phone in front of your face and press the power button and the phone unlocks instantly.

OPPO has also added a couple of features such as Unlock when eyes are open and Auto brighten screen to enhance the security and user experience. I have been using the face unlock and fingerprint reader right from day one and it works flawlessly. Overall, the fingerprint reader works well and is one of the fastest in the segment.

Coming to the Audio, the Reno5 Pro supports Dolby ATMOS for an improved audio experience. There are four different modes – Smart mode (Auto adopt), Movie, Gaming, and Music. One of the biggest drawbacks of the Reno5 Pro is the lack of stereo speakers.

The device comes with a single bottom-firing mono speaker and you’ll definitely miss the stereo effect while watching the movie. But, for general usage like music playback, calls over speakerphone, the speaker does its job well. The audio out is clear and loud and did not observe distortion at higher volume levels. Reno5 Pro 5G doesn’t support FM Radio.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Battery

One of the unique selling points of the Reno5 Pro is its battery. The device is backed by a 4,350mAh dual-cell battery (Two x 2,125mAh batteries) that supports a whopping 65W fast charging which is also called SuperVOOC 2.0 charging. You’ll also get an official OPPO-branded 65W charger inside the box.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Side View
OPPO Reno5 Pro Side

Apart from the SuperVOOC 2.0, the Reno5 Pro also supports VOOC 3.0, Quick Charge (9V/2A) and also USB Power Delivery (9V/2A). You need about 32 minutes to fully charge (1 to 100%) the Reno5 Pro. Also, a quick 15 minutes of charge will give you about 60% of battery life. This is very useful when you are in a rush.

If you are a power user, you can switch to High-performance mode that increases the overall speed of the operations such as gaming, browsing, and video streaming. In this mode, you get better and improved performance compared to the regular mode but there is a noticeable decrease in the battery life. Also, the device starts warming up with continuous usage. Make sure you are using this mode when you are at the home or the office and have access to the stock charger.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ performs very well in almost every operation including high-graphics games and there is no need to switch to High-performance mode. To keep the device charged as long as possible OPPO has also provided various battery life enhancement features such as:

  • Power Saving mode.
  • Super power-saving mode.
  • Sleep standby optimization- Runs the phone on low power mode when you’re sleeping.
  • Optimized night charging – Reduces battery aging and prevents overcharging by controlling the battery charging speed at night.

A fully charged battery will give you about one and a half days of battery life with regular usage in 60Hz mode and about one-day battery life when the display is set to 90Hz. Regular usage includes WhatsApp, Gmail, Slack, Duo, Facebook, Twitter, and regular voice & video calls and also moderate gaming with a couple of games such as The Room Three and Clash of Clans etc.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Software

With ColorOS 11 OPPO has made some noteworthy changes in the Software. The Reno5 Pro ships with ColorOS 11.1 with Android 11 on top. Most of the features of ColorOS 11 are quite common in all supported devices but the Reno5 Pro 5G comes with device-specific enhancements to improve the user experience.

OPPO Reno5 Pro UI
OPPO Reno5 Pro UI

Out of the box, you’ll get about 106GB of internal UFS 2.1 storage and the rest of the storage space is occupied by the operating system files and a bunch of pre-installed apps. The Home screen is simple and neat. You can customize the rows, columns, and also transitions. Swiping right on the home screen will open Google Discover and you cannot disable it.

The Reno5 Pro also comes preloaded with a bunch of Google apps including Google Phone, Google Contacts, Messages, GPay, Google One, Google Podcasts, and Google News. Additionally, there are a few party apps such as Facebook, Netflix, Snapchat, Flipkart, Amazon Shopping, and WPS Office. Except for Netflix, you can delete all the 3rd party apps.

OPPO has replaced its own Dialer and Messaging apps with Google Phone and Google Messages apps.

  • Restrict apps from accessing Mobile Data and WIFI
  • Data saving mode – Restricts background apps from using mobile data

OPPO Reno5 Pro Connectivity

The Reno5 Pro supports Dual SIM, Dual-band Wi-Fi 6, USB OTG, Dual VoLTE, Dual VoWiFi, GPS, A-GPS, and Bluetooth 5.1 for enhanced connectivity. The primary SIM supports 4G as well 5G while the second slot supports only 4G. I have used the Reno5 Pro with Airtel on the Primary and Jio on the secondary slot. I did not observe any network stability issues especially indoors or call drops including the calls over VoLTE and VoWiFi.

I also tested the Bluetooth with multiple Bluetooth earphones such as Wings Wibe (review) and Wings Elevate (review). The connection was stable and did not observe any disturbances or connectivity drop. The phone also works very well with the Dual-band WIFI router and never faced any issues. The phone also supports multiple Wi-Fi features that will help you always connected.

  • Auto-connect to the best Wi-Fi network – If you have multiple routers at home or office, the phone automatically switches to the best Wi-Fi network.
  • Auto-switch to Mobile network when Wi-Fi is poor.
  • Dual-Channel acceleration – Uses WIFI & mobile data simultaneously for improved speeds. As of now Instagram, Google Chrome, WhatsApp, and OPPO Browser are supported.

Reno5 Pro is a 5G-compatible phone and supports Global 5G networks. Unfortunately, 5G is not available in India yet and there is no way to test the 5G capabilities as of now. The full commercial roll-out of 5G in India is expected in Q1 2022. The device even supports Smart 5G that automatically switches between 4G and 5G for extended battery life.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Rear camera

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G has 5 cameras – 4 at the back and 1 at the front. On the front you’ll get a 32MP selfie camera housed inside a tiny circular display cut out on the top left. On the rear, there are 4 cameras placed on a square-shaped module along with a LED flash. The rear quad-camera setup includes an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera, 64-megapixel primary camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel Monochrome camera.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Quad Camera
OPPO Reno5 Pro Quad Camera

The 64MP main camera captures very good quality images indoors as well as outdoors. OPPO has also done a lot of improvements in the software that goes well with hardware. Photos captured are bright, sharp, and rich in colours. The photos include a good amount of Highlights and Shadows with a great dynamic range. The Auto focus is fast and works very well in the good lighting conditions.

Just like most of the OPPO devices, the Reno5 Pro also supports AI mode that automatically optimizes the image based on the subject and surrounding conditions. The Portrait mode works really well and you’ll get a good amount of background blur. Even the edge detection is impressive.

OPPO Reno5 Pro AI Mode
OPPO Reno5 Pro AI Mode

The wide-angle lens has a field-of-view of 115° and the performance is above average. The camera performance is not as good as the primary camera as it struggles in the low lighting conditions. There is also a lack of dynamic range. Photos captured under daylight are good but the noise is visible even with slightly low-light. The macro sensor takes good close-up shots whenever there is a good light but struggles under low-lighting conditions.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Rear Camera
OPPO Reno5 Pro Rear Camera

Reno5 Pro 5G comes with a dedicated Night mode to capture photos under low-lighting conditions. In night mode, the phone uses some special algorithms to capture and optimize the image. Once you hit the shutter, the phone takes about 5 seconds to capture and optimize the image. If the light is too low, the Ultra Dark Mode kicks in and enhances the image. Images taken using night mode have high noise but include good brightness and fair amount of details.

Rear camera features

  • Dedicated Wide-angle mode
  • Digital zoom – 2x, 5x
  • Customizable AI Beautification
  • Dedicated Portrait mode with Neon & AI color modes
  • Auto HDR, AI scene enhancement
  • Night mode with Ultra Dark mode and Tripod mode – All three modes work with the Primary camera as well as the Wide-angle camera
  • 15 Photo filters, Integrated Google Lens in the camera viewfinder
  • Dual-view Video – Shoot videos from front & rear cameras at the same time
  • Expert mode – Change camera settings such as White Balance, ISO, etc. manually
  • AI color portrait and 11 other video filters
  • Enable or Disable shutter sound, Camera timer
  • Extra HD, Stickers, Panorama, and Macro mode
  • Gesture support – Touch to take photos, and Gesture to take photos
  • Customizable Watermarks – Show Phone model, Date & Time, and Location
  • Direct access to SOLOOP templates right from the viewfinder
  • Ultra-steady video, Adjustable bokeh, Night flare portrait
  • AI Video automatically switches to Live HRD, Ultra night, and AI highlight video modes based on the surrounding conditions and subject

  • Lens stain detection

Nowadays most phones support Gesture to take photos but many of them don’t detect the gesture properly. Even I experienced this issue while reviewing phones from different brands. But I am really surprised with the Palm Gesture detection in Reno5 Pro 5G. The phone was able to detect my palm almost every time. Once you are set to take a selfie, especially a group selfie, simply raise your hand, with an open palm. The front camera detects the palm and automatically takes the picture with a 3-second countdown.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Front camera

The Reno5 Pro comes with a 32MP front camera positioned on the top right of the display in a tiny display cut-out. The front camera on the Reno5 Pro takes great selfies and the performance is impressive. The edge detection is very good and gives a good amount of background blur. Selfies taken under artificial lighting as well as under natural light are very good. Even the selfies taken under low-light include good details and sufficient brightness.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Front Camera
OPPO Reno5 Pro Front Camera

The device comes with enhanced beautification features and there is a manually adjustable slider that allows you to set the amount of beautification needed. Just like other OPPO phones, the beautification is enabled by default and it makes the skin a lot smoother and brighter. You’ll have to manually adjust the slider to zero to get natural-looking selfies.

Front camera features

  • Manually adjustable AI Beautification
  • Video recording with Super Steady mode
  • Ai highlights video, Dual-view video
  • Bokeh video mode with adjustable bokeh
  • Video filters, Portrait mode
  • HDR mode, Selfie timer
  • 1080p and 720 video capture
  • Slow-motion 1080p and Time-lapse video capture
  • Panorama, Sticker mode
  • Night mode with face filters
  • Video encoding – H.265 and H.264
  • Enable or Disable shutter sound
  • Auto brightens the screen during low-light

Front camera samples

One of the most highlighted parts of the Reno5 Pro 5G is the AI Highlight Video. Once turned on it automatically enhances the dynamic range in the daytime and brightens the video at night. The Reno5 Pro 5G supports 4K video capture at 30fps, Full HD 1080p at 30fps or 60fps, and super slow-motion video at 960fps. 4K videos captured during daylight are good but lacs stabilization. A tripod will do the job but the footage will end up a bit shaky even if you use your both hands.

When it comes to Full HD video, you can use the Ultra Steady mode that uses Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) to stabilize the footage. Make a note that Ultra-steady mode works only with 1080p, not with the 4K resolution. The device also supports Dual Video mode that allows you to simultaneously shoot videos from front and rear cameras at the same time. Additionally, the device also comes pre-loaded with the SOLOOP video editor app that helps you to edit the video, change background music, add filters, etc.

What I Like

  • Premium light-weight design
  • Excellent AMOLED display
  • Very good 64MP camera
  • Blazing fast 65W charging
  • Good front camera
  • Responsive fingerprint reader
  • Lag-free software
  • Incredible chipset performance
  • Future-ready with 5G support

What I Don’t Like

  • No 120Hz display
  • No stereo speakers
  • Average macro camera
  • No 3.5mm Audio jack
  • No expandable storage

Verdict, pro’s & con’s

Reno5 Pro 5G is a premium mid-range smartphone, priced slightly higher than the competition but it really exceeded my expectations. It has an absolutely amazing design, rich in-hand feel, a brilliant display, an above-average camera, and also a blazing fast charging that takes the battery to 100% in just 32 minutes. On top, the device supports 5G and future-ready.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G
OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G

Even though the cameras don’t play well under low-lighting conditions, you’ll get a decent camera experience with both front as well as the rear cameras. The MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ delivers incredible performance and works great with well-tweaked ColorOS 11. You’ll hardly find any shutters or lags in day-to-day operations. The device also has a very sleek and light-weight design that sits well in the hands and also in the pockets.

There are some drawbacks too such as no 120Hz display, no 3.5mm audio jack, no expandable storage, and also no stereo speakers. You might miss the 3.5mm audio jack but the rest of the features are not deal-breakers. Even the supplied Type-C earphones aren’t great and you’ll have to buy a good pair of wireless earphones for a better AV experience.

OPPO Reno5 Pro Blue
OPPO Reno5 Pro Bl

Overall, the Reno5 Pro 5G is a feature-packed all-rounder phone that justifies its pricing. It may not be the best in its price segment but has its own advantages. So, if you are looking for a future-ready phone with a powerful chipset, lag-free OS, great display, super-fast charging, and an eye-catchy design, OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is for you.

OPPO Reno5 Pro case

OPPO is bundling a free plastic case and a screen protector (pre-applied) inside the box and both are made out of good quality plastic. There is a small flap at the bottom of the case that gives you access to the USB port. As the display is curved on both sides, it’s better to use the device with the case, else, even a small drop may break the display near the curved section. The supplied case is enough to protect the device from accidental drops and it also protect the camera bump.

Where to buy Reno5 Pro

OPPO Reno5 Pro comes in two color options – Astral Blue, & Starry Black and priced at ₹35,990. You can buy this phone via Amazon.in, Flipkart and also through offline retail stores across India.
