Play is a Delhi-based startup that recently launched a range of Fitness and Audio-based accessories in India and PLAYGO N-23 Wireless Neckband Headset is the brand’s first device in the Audio segment. These entry-level earphones come with various features such as Dual speakers, Water Resistant, Voice Assistant access, Dual Battery, etc. Check out my detailed review below.
The PlayGo N-23 has a minimalistic design wherein two battery Holsters are attached to ends of a flexible neckband and two earbuds are attached to the Holsters with a Controller. These earbuds are made up of Plastic and Metal and also have the ‘Play’ branding on it. The outer part of the earbud is made up of metal with silver accents on the edges and the inner part is wrapped with good quality plastic. Each earbud comes with Dual speakers which are clearly visible through a transparent casing. The outer casing also comes with built-in magnets so that you can attach two earbuds whenever you’re are not using it.
The earbuds are inclined at an angle and sit comfortably in the ear canal. You can also change the ear-tips for a personalized fit. There are three different ear-tips including the one which comes attached to the earbuds. The flexible neckband that rests on your neck is made up of soft premium plastic and has a matte finish. The neckband is light in weight and you don’t even feel that they are on the neck. The neckband is comfortable to wear and provides good support to earbuds to stay in your ears.
The neckband is flexible, durable and also keeps its shape even if you bend it or twist it. The wires attached to neckband are average in quality but it does its job well. Make a note that, while removing the earphones from your neck, do not pull the wire as it may break with frequent usage, instead, remove the neckband over the head for better durability. These earphones are also IPx5 certified and the nano-coating protects the earphones from sweat & water when exercising and during rain.
The inline controller is made up of rubber kind of material with a matte finish and includes three buttons – Volume Up, Volume Down and a Multi-function button. One of the key highlights of the PlayGo N-23 is the Voice Assistant support. Long pressing the multi-function button turns On the Voice Assistant such as Alexa, Google Assistant on Android Phone or Siri on iPhone and allows you to quickly interact with your phone without touching it. Also, double-pressing the button calls the previous number on the Android as well as iPhone. There is also an in-line microphone which is pretty decent. Voice calls are clear and also people on the other end didn’t report any issues either. These earphones also switch seamlessly between music and calls.
The Micro USB port is placed on the left side of the controller and protected by a small rubber flap. Pulling out the rubber flap will give access to the charging port. What I observed is, the flap is fragile and may break off with general wear & tear. Play is also bundling a micro USB cable inside the package. Make a note that, the package does not include a power adapter and you’ll have to use the one which you use to charge your smartphone. You can use your normal as well as a fast charger. Key functions of the controller are:
- Turn ON – Long press the multi-function button for 2 seconds
- Turn ON – Long press the multi-function button for 5 seconds
- Play or Pause – Press the multi-function button once
- Next Song – Press the ‘+’ button for 1-2 seconds
- Previous Song – Press the ‘-‘ button for 1-2 seconds
- Volume Up – Press the ‘+’ button
- Volume Down – Press the ‘-‘ button
- Activate Voice Assistant – Long press the multi-function button for 1 to 2 seconds
- Answer Call – Press the multi-function button once
- Reject Call – Long press the multi-function button
PlayGo N-23 is equipped with a 360mAh battery (180mAh x 2) which is placed inside the battery holster attached at the ends of the neckband. The Battery holster comes with a matte finish on the back and a Glossy mirror finish on the front for a better look and feel, but, its a fingerprint magnet. According to Play, you’ll get about 20 hours of playtime but, during my testing, I got around 15 hours of playtime which is not all bad when compared to an average 9-10 hours of playtime with other entry-level wireless earphones. Another key feature of PlayGo N-23 is the charging time. It took about 110 minutes to go from 0 to 100%. That means you’ll get about 15 hours of playtime with about 2 hours of charging.
Overcharge Protection – Once you put these earphones for charging, the LED indicator on the controller turns Red during charging and turns Blue once the charging is done. Incase if the supplied voltage reaches 4.2V, these earphones shut down automatically due to overcharging protection. In case if the voltage below 3.5v, the LED turns red and flickers once in two seconds.
PlayGo N-23 comes with Bluetooth 5.0 and had a Bluetooth range of about 10 meters. These earphones support instant pairing and work with all Bluetooth-enabled Smartphones, Laptops, Smart TVs, Personal Computers, Tablets, etc. These earphones are also compatible with mainstream apps and automatically connect back to the earlier connected phone. To connect these earphones to your smartphone:
- Long press the multi-function button on the controller until it starts flashing in Blue and Red
- Now, turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone
- Tap on Pair a new device
- Select PalyGo-N23
- Select Yes from the popup to Pair the earphones with your phone
Due to Dual speakers on each earbud, these earphones sound good with almost no roughness. Considering the price point, the audio quality is really good with clear vocals and treble. The audio output is also loud and the speakers don’t distort even with high volume. Also, I did not observe any delay in audio/video sync while watching videos from popular streaming apps such as Netflix, YouTube, and Prime Video. Even though it produces a good amount of bass, I was expecting a slightly better Bass due to the dual speakers. I have tested this earphone with Xiaomi Mi A2, Samsung Galaxy M30s, iPhone X, MacBook Pro, and Mi LED TV and did not observe any lag, delay, or connection drops.
What I Like
- Amazing battery life
- Dual speakers with above-average bass
- Quick access to Voice Assistant
- Magnetic Clips
- Durable neckband
What I Don’t Like
- Wire quality
- USB port rubber flap
My Opinion – Being a new brand, Play has done a great job right from the Quality till the Performance. Coming to the price, the PalyGo N-23 is priced at ₹3,499 (MRP) which is expensive considering the ongoing competition. But, these earphones are available on Amazon.in as low as ₹1,299 which makes it a great buy. These earphones might not appeal to bass-heads but considering the price, it’s a strong contender in the sub ₹1,500 earphones category. What impressed me the most with these headphones is the battery life. You’ll easily get about 15 hours of continuous music playback. Apart from that, quick access to Voice Assistant and Quick call to the previously dialed number will help you a lot especially when you are on the go. PlayGo N23 is highly recommended if you are looking for decent wireless earphones with water-resistant and good battery life.
