OnePlus Concept One with Invisible Rear Camera Announced

OnePlus announces its first-ever concept phone dubbed as OnePlus Concept One at CES 2020, Las Vegas. It is also the first smartphone in the world to feature an invisible camera built using color-shifting glass technology (electrochromic glass technology). OnePlus has partnered with McLaren and used the similar technology used in McLaren’s 720S luxury sports car, which features a glass roof panel that can alter its tint and control the amount of light allowed through.

The glass of the OnePlus Concept One uses organic particles to create changes in transparency so that the glass covering the camera lenses can shift in an instant from opaque black to entirely clear. Additionally, the glass also acts as a polarizing filter for the camera that prevents overexposed shots and allows users to take sharper & more detailed shots, especially under direct sunlight. Apart from the color-shifting glass technology, OnePlus has also used the same premium quality leather on the backside of the phone which is specially tailored for McLaren’s own cars.

The Electrochromic glass is composed of two panels of glass with a color-shifting material in between them. According to OnePlus, the glass panels are just 0.1mm each, for a combined total of 0.35 which is far thinner than the industry average and also as thin as a regular screen protector film. Regarding the color-shifting, Concept One’s invisible camera takes about 0.7 seconds for the glass to transition from solid black to fully clear. This means the camera glass becomes transparent even before you open the camera app and uses almost no power.

The specifications of the OnePlus Concept One are the exact same as the OnePlus 7T Pro. It has the same 6.67-inch QHD+ 90Hz AMOLED display and comes with Snapdragon 855+ Mobile Platform, a triple rear camera, a pop-up front camera and a 4,000mAh battery with 30W WARP charge. The only change is the design. It will not go on sale as its a concept phone but, we might see a phone with the same technology in the future.

Commenting on the launch, Jo Lewis, Colour & Materials Design Manager at McLaren Automotive, said, “At McLaren, we select the best quality leathers produced in the UK, Ireland, and Scotland. The soft grained semi-aniline leather is soft to touch, and due to the nature of the natural grain, this creates a beautifully silky haptic. Leather exudes luxury, therefore, was one of the aspects of this OnePlus concept device that we were keen to offer our input. Our design at McLaren embraces the natural features of the leather through the subtle grain variation which adds character to each car – making each McLaren completely unique and therefore making this OnePlus concept device follow in a similar unique path.”
